The Balinese Scale is a Pentatonic Minor scale type. It differs from Natural Minor in that it has a flattened second, and the fourth and seventh notes are omitted.

This means that we can look at this scale as the Phrygian mode with the fourth and seventh tones omitted. Because of this it is also referred to as the Phrygian Pentatonic.

The large gaps and the the flat second and third give the darkness of the Phrygian scale, but with a much more open and exotic sound.

This scale can be very widely used due to it’s great diversity. It reminds me of the melodies that I have
created on the Karimba. Pictured is a traditional Balinese Karimba.

The Balinese scale comes to us from Alabama. Just Kidding. It comes from Bali and plays an important role in the rich musical tradition of this beautiful country.
