Here’s a scale from the diverse musical tradition of Ethiopia, where there are over 80 different tribes, each with their own musical heritage and unique sound. There are many Ethiopian musicians who have helped to poularize Ethiopian music around the world. One of the first and most popular of these Ethiopian musical ambassadors was Aster Aweke, who now resides in Los Angeles.

Although there are of course too many artists to mention, Gigi is one San Francisco based Ethiopian artist that has recieved much public attention and critical acclaim.

Gigi has collaborated with such greats as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Pharoah Sanders and has been produced by her husband Bill Laswell as well as Chris Blackwell.

This particular Ethiopian scale starts as our major scale does and ends like the harmonic minor. A very nice scale with an exotic sound.
