This scale, the fourth mode generated from the Harmonic Minor Scale is known by some as Lydian Minor. It differs form the Lydian mode in that it has a minor third and a minor seventh.

This scale is commonly used in traditional and contemporary Jewish music and in Klezmer music.

This scale has many names: Mi sheberakh (meaning the one who blesses!), Av horakhamim, Ukrainian Dorian, Slikha, and lastly Doina.

No I didn’t make that up.

Like the Harmonic minor scale and all of the modes generated from it, much of the “flavor” of of this scale comes from the step and a half gap. In this instance it occurs between the third and fourth tones.

Use it to your advantage for a change of style in minor contexts.
