The third mode melodic minor is a truly fascinating scale.  Known to many as the lydian Augmented, it is technically a major “type” scale, because of it’s major third,  but perhaps more than any “major” scale, it is dark and full of intrigue.  It draws you in.

It differs from the Lydian mode only in its sharp 5th.  But as in all cases, one note makes all the difference.  This particular combination of notes allows a novel pathway to exploring the “Dark Side of Major” as Rick Beato describes.

It offers the dissonance of the flat 5th, in this case, a sharp 4th, (don’t let this confuse you, it’s not ultimately important) which is the second most dissonant of all diads, second only to the…  yeah…, you got it, the flat 2nd.  Find one in every car.  Plate of Shrimp.

All of the scales of EMG hold beauty and possibilities found and yet to be found.  This scale is particular and unique, for certain, and is celebrated by those who have discovered and explored it’s spellbinding and bewildering potential.
