All of the ancient scales had the 8 notes (counting the octave) which are equivalent to the whitenotes on a keyboard today.

In all of Western music theory notation and analysis, we are really just talking about arrangements of these twelve tones.

When many of us think of a scale the first thing we think of is the major scale and perhaps fluffy images of the Sound of Music.
