7th Mode Melodic Minor
The 7th mode of the melodic minor is a scale called the Super Locrian.
This scale is commonly heard in the folk songs of the Middle East as well as Turkey and Hungary, where it is known as Shur.
The flat sixth and seventh lend a dark and serious aspect to a scale which is otherwisehappy, jazzy and joyful.
The scale is sophisticated and thoughtful without being too brooding or predictably dark.
The second mode of the melodic minor scale could be called the "phrygidorian" mode.
This scale has a dark, somber sound on the lower notes and a resolving, "melodic" sound on the highest few notes.
This creates an interstting tonal ambiguity. Like many of the modes of the harmonic minor scale,it has a slightly arabic or Egyptian feel.
This scale is commonly used in traditional and contemporary Jewish music and in Klezmer music.
You don't want to end up sticking out in the wrong place, so remember to resolve.
